How To Clean Your Tent for Extended Longevity

Your tent is easily one of the most valuable and useful pieces of camping equipment in your kit. More than likely, you don’t want anything to happen to your tent outside of typical wear and tear.

Maintaining your tent starts with basic cleaning, both during your camping adventures and once the trip is over. In this article, we break down exactly what you need to do to clean a tent thoroughly. As well as outlining the best practices for extending the tent’s life and how to save time and effort during your camping adventures.

What You Will Need

Before you leave for your camping trip, ensure you are adequately equipped with the essential cleaning tools for your tent. Every time you camp you should bring with you:

  • Clean, unused sponges
  • Dustpan and brush
  • Mild cleaning detergent

Also, make sure that you have access to clean water and have checked that your chosen detergent is suitable for your tent’s fabric. Keep these items in your go-to camping kit or beside your tent to ensure you don’t forget them.

Clean as You Go

The more you look after your tent during the days you are away, the less you will need to do at the end. Spot cleaning is one of the most effective cleaning methods. Sweep out and lightly sponge the tent every couple of days, or as the need arises.

Tracking dirt into your tent is easier than you may think. Avoid keeping food an open containers inside as these attract ants and other food-seeking insects. Also consider removing your shoes before entering and walking on the fabric.

In terms of liquid, we advise keeping all sticky liquids, such as alcohol and sugary drinks, outside of your tent also, as these can become difficult to clean up if spilled on tent material. Not to mention sugar is a magnet for all kinds of critters.

Last Day Washdown

Before packing up on the last day of your camping trip is the perfect time to give your tent a more thorough clean. Find yourself a flat surface with minimal dirt, to position your tent. Check the area first as the cleaning motion may tear the fabric on nearby sharp objects.

Start by sweeping down the tent completely and then lift and shake to thoroughly remove any contents. For any stains, use cold water to raise them, scrubbing gently to avoid ruining the fabric. Use the same solution for your tent poles, thoroughly cleaning away any dirt on the pegs or surrounds.

Make sure to dry your tent before packing it away. Tent material can be prone to mould and mildew. Bacteria can also build up if you’ve airtightly packed your tent away while it is still wet. Not only will your tent be ruined very quickly this way, but you will also find yourself out of pocket replacing it.

Store Away Properly

Don’t discard the tent bag it came with. This simple case will provide adequate coverage for your tent when stored at home, or in transit to your campsite. Store your tent in a cool, dark space at home, away from heat sources.
