What To Know About Safe Wading Techniques

Wading is a popular style of fishing, as enthusiasts enjoy getting closer to nature with the more intimate experience. Whether in a secure stream, pond, lake or river designed of wading, there are a few wade fishing essentials.

Wading safety techniques ensure you and your fishing friends are protected in both shallow water and deep water. We’re sharing with you the best tips to help you stay safe, for even the most experienced fishing fanatic. Here are our ways to test the water, understand potential hazards and make confident, safe wading decisions.

Forget the Rush

With the lack of visibility that most lakes and streams have, rushing or running into the water will almost guarantee you will slip and fall on the unseen. Caution is best when entering the water. Take small steps, keeping your feet close together while watching the water in front of you. In times like these, you are best to use any spectacles you need for long and short-sightedness. Remove your sunglasses as they may add extra glare onto the water surface.

Find Your Position First

It may be tempting to do two things at once, walking and casting. However, it can take very little for you to lose your footing following this process.

Experienced fishing fanatics can attest to losing their balance during casting, especially in rougher water. Finding themselves falling backwards from the swinging motion. It’s essential to have your feet planted firmly first and then cast. Repeat this action every time you need to move too, even if the movement is just a couple of steps.

Wear Waders

Like with any other style, it’s important to have the right fishing gear when going wading. This includes multiple elements of your outfit for the day. Including safe wading shoes, a good pair of waders and a wading belt or wading staff if you need.

It’s best to wear safe, secure shoes while wading such as wading boots. On hot days it can be tempting to wear thongs in the warm water. However, the lack of stability these types of shoes give won’t protect you from the water or creatures inhabiting your fishing spot. Nor will they provide ankle support in rougher water.

Some experts say no wade fishing gear is complete without a stick or similar support system. This allows smooth movement through thicker areas and extra stability when secure footing becomes impossible.

In cooler weather, you may find yourself needing additional socks and pants to change into after you have finished wading. More than likely your lower garments will get wet and dirty during the process.

Most adventure stores will be able to advise you on specific brands with waterproof gear. As it is necessary to avoid getting cold and becoming affected by the water climate.

Choose Against Wading If Necessary

Wading requires you to be a competent judge of your fishing conditions. One of the wisest safety precautions you can take is to have a backup option ready to go. When the conditions become too much there is no point in risking your health and safety for the sport you love. Determine a backup option that allows you to enjoy fishing without the added risk.
