Why You Should Be Camping This Christmas

Christmas: ‘tis the season to be jolly. However, if you’ve ever been to a mall or a supermarket in December, you could be forgiven for thinking that Christmas is actually a time for stress and overspending. That’s why this year you should be thinking about having a Christmas adventure with your family instead. Escape down your favourite 4×4 track or discover a new camping spot where you can truly capture the joy of family, togetherness and gratitude.

1 – Avoid the crowds

With school holidays starting just weeks before Christmas, most people organising a caravan or camping trip will be leaving after the major celebrations to ensure plenty of time for planning. By planning ahead and arriving at your destination before the big day you’ll beat a lot of the crowds. Plus you’ll get more time to tackle the 4WD tracks and adventures off the beaten track well before other holiday makers arrive.

2 – Enjoy Christmas dinner

Just because you’re away from your kitchen doesn’t mean you have to miss out on a delicious Christmas dinner. Most country pubs and restaurants will be putting on a fully cooked Christmas lunch or dinner with all the trimmings. Just do a little research on your camping destination, and make sure you book in ahead of time.

Alternatively, there are plenty of ways you can cook a turkey on a campfire and enjoy Christmas dinner under the stars. This too just requires a little forward planning to prepare and package everything you’re going to cook before you leave. You can package up your turkey, stuffing and vegetables in foil ready to cook or bring along a dutch oven to use over the fire. If you’re choosing the alfoil route, let the campfire burn down to coals, nestle your turkey package within and leave to cook. Remember to take caution when checking the bird as the foil & coals will be hot.

3 – Spend time not money

There’s nothing like a family Christmas camping trip to bring about some bonding. Pitching tents together, building campfires, exploring bush trails and relaxing in the great outdoors. Celebrate this Christmas with the gift of family and quality time.

Holidays with the family don’t have to be expensive, there are a number of free campsites which don’t require a booking. So if you’re arriving before the day, you will benefit from their first-in-first-served policy.
