Janowen Hills 4WD Park – Queensland’s Best Kept 4WD Secret

Janowen Hills 4WD Park is a Mecca for any off-roading enthusiast. Queenslanders pride themselves on their love of the outdoors and anything with an engine in it. So, it is no surprise that 4WDing is a popular pastime in the sunshine state.

There many great venues up and down Queensland that offer amazing experiences and lots of off-road adventures. But there is one venue that stands heads and shoulders above the rest when it comes to 4WDing.

Location, Location, Location

About 160km outside of the urbane byways of Brisbane, almost hidden in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range, is Janowen Hills 4WD Park. A veritable paradise for anyone with a tank of fuel and a thirst for unpaved roads.

Founded by a husband and wife team in 2004, the dog-friendly, 1000 acre site with its many gullies and hills is the crown jewel of the region’s off-road offerings.

The Tracks

What sets Janowen Hills apart from other camping grounds is the sheer number and variety of tracks. There are a total of 80 tracks with difficulties ranging from easy to extreme.

The courses are categorised by colour according to their challenge level along with a detailed explanation of each track terrain. Wet weather increases the difficulty of the courses by at least two levels.

Possibly the most popular course on the property is the Gymkhana track. Designed with obstacles like wrecked cars, discarded tyres and tranches, the Gymkhana is a love letter to the most ardent 4×4 enthusiast.

Make a Weekend of it

Janowen Hills has facilities for caravanning and camping which include hot showers, fire pits and a local tuckshop. So while it may be nearly impossible to do even half of the tracks in a day, it may be worth staying over for a weekend to give it a try.

The park only allows 4WD under a buddy system. Which means that you can only hit the tracks if your vehicle is accompanied by another.

While Janowen Hills’ campsites are accessible to 2WDs and caravans, the tracks are restricted to 4WDs. There is also a strict no motorbikes policy which includes quadbikes, ATVs and dirt bikes.

Whether you just want to relax in your campsite by the creek or love to hear the sound of rubber grinding on rock and soil Janowen Hills is worth a try.
