Backyard Camping Champions

The Easter long weekend looked extremely different this year. With outdoor enthusiasts across the nation taking to backyard camping solutions amidst the COVID-19 home confinement restrictions.

This week, social media has been filled with couples and families pitching tents just metres from their homes. Easter is one of the biggest weekends of the year for travelling and camping. As a result of travel restrictions, Aussies got creative this weekend to meet their outdoor needs.

Families gathered around gas stoves and backyard campfires, roasting marshmallows. They also took to hosting movie nights using hung sheets and at-home projectors. Similarly, some lucky campers even set up site next to a backyard creek or swimming pool for that real camping feel.

Camp At Home Heroes

To encourage positive behaviour, organisations such as the Caravanning Association of Australia, and even some of the Big4 holiday parks have gotten in on the fun. The hashtag #campathomeheroes received numerous mentions over the weekend from at home campers sharing their setups and entering the running to win some amazing prizes.

Big4’s Narooma East’s location ran a competition over the Easter long weekend using the #campathomeheroes hashtag. Online users were given the opportunity to share images of their backyard camping setup for the chance to win one of four $500 holiday park vouchers.

Created only a few weeks ago, The Backyard Campsite Facebook group has already reached over 3,000 members. Meanwhile, this group has become a wonderful community filled will like-minded adventurers sharing their backyard camping tips, pictures and inspirations.

The group, started by a school teacher from Ballarat, has reached international audiences. Online fans from Vietnam, India and Singapore for example, all getting in on the fun. Across international borders camping enthusiasts are coming together to share positive stories and enjoy the outdoor lifestyle.
